Technical Hardware Deep Dive
Why Does DroidDeck Require Qualcomm Adreno 730+ or 8xx GPUs?
Android applications generally render graphics through Android’s native SurfaceFlinger compositor using restricted mobile OpenGL ES or Vulkan driver implementations. However, running desktop PC games compiled for Windows DirectX 11, DirectX 12, or Vulkan requires desktop-class Vulkan extensions (such as VK_EXT_transform_feedback, dynamic rendering, and direct memory pointers).
The open-source community developed Turnip (part of the Mesa project), an open-source Vulkan driver designed specifically for Qualcomm Adreno hardware. Turnip communicates directly with Qualcomm's KGSL kernel interface, completely bypassing Android's graphics stack restrictions and delivering the desktop Vulkan capabilities needed by Valve's Proton.
Why Adreno 730+ & 8xx?
The Adreno 730 (Snapdragon 8 Gen 1), Adreno 740 (8 Gen 2), and Adreno 750 (8 Gen 3) feature complete architectural support for Vulkan 1.3 and Turnip’s hardware feature set.
Why are Mali & Tensor Unsupported?
ARM Mali and Google Tensor GPUs use proprietary binary drivers without an equivalent open-source Turnip KGSL stack. Consequently, ARM64 Proton cannot initialize graphics contexts on these chips.
